Our Four Step Approach to Varifocal Dispensing
STEP 1 – ATTENTION TO DETAIL IN YOUR EYE EXAMINATION
FINDING OUT ABOUT YOU, YOUR EYESIGHT AND HOW TO ACHEIVE THE BEST, MOST NATURAL VISION FOR THE THINGS THAT ARE IMPORTANT TO YOU.
We see our eye examinations as much more than just a “sight test” with plenty of time to find out about you and any difficulties you may be having with your vision or your glasses. Many opticians have 20 or 30 minute appointments, but we want to offer you much more than we could do in a 20 or 30 minute appointment. At Keyes Eyecare we allow 50 minutes which ensures unrushed eye examinations with plenty of opportunity to explore what is important to you about your eyes and your vision.
STEP 2 – ATTENTION TO DETAIL IN YOUR LENS CONSULTATION
THESE ARE IMPORTANT FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE THE DECISION MAKING PROCESS.
Lifestyle. We consider aspects of your lifestyle which will guide us to provide recommended solutions tailored to your own individual needs. We will consider your occupation, hobbies, sports or any other activity you may do that may be relevant.
We pay particular attention to how much you use your eyes for specific tasks. Most of us are spending an increasing amount of time looking at computer screens and this requires a specific approach. For you the priority might be Golf, reading or driving or another activity more specific to you.
Ergonomics. We will factor in our observations of your head position, posture and reading position as these could affect the choice or positioning of lens and the choice of frames.
Frame styling. Of course, you will want to look and feel good as well as see well.
Technology. Our Ipad varifocal demonstration app compares in an interactive way how different lenses perform in different situations. This is a great help in visualising which lens choices would work best for you.
Expectations. It's important for us to consider together your expectation of the lenses and why you are considering varifocals and advise accordingly.
Technical aspects. This is our bit; there are a number of important measurements to take and calculations to make which are vital to successful varifocal wear. Pantoscopic tilt, back vertex distance, centration distance, dihedral angle and corridor length being the main ones.
Lens thickness and weight. There are many permutations that determine how thick a lens will be and we will advise on all of these.
All of these areas will be discussed in an informal conversation with an experienced professionally qualified optician. There's quite a lot to cover, but we can make it interesting and informative.
Importantly, if we don't feel that a varifocal is the best solution for you, we will tell you honestly and discuss alternatives.
STEP 3 – FRIENDLY PROFESSIONAL SERVICE:
As a SEIKO approved Varifocal Specialist, committed to your success with varifocals, your glasses will always be dispensed and fitted by an experienced professionally qualified optician. We believe that expert experience, as well as detailed training in varifocal dispensing, is important for you to get the best out of your choice of eyewear.
All of your decisions are backed up by our price promise and complete satisfaction guarantee and during our discussions we promise always to respect your budget.
At your fitting appointment we will discuss again the features and benefits of your new lenses and how to use them effectively. We want you to get the best out of your new glasses and enjoy them to the full.
STEP 4 – ONGOING AFTERCARE
We want you to continue to get the best out of your glasses in the months and years after having them fitted so encourage you to bring them in for a regular service. We want them to remain comfortable and giving you the best vision and this is best done by having a regular re-fitting appointment. You are welcome to return for unlimited refitting appointments for the life of your glasses.
Varifocals gradually change in power from the top to the bottom of the lens. This allows power for tasks at middle distance, for example, viewing a computer screen and, unlike a bifocal, there is no visible line across the lens. With varifocals, one pair of lenses can be used for distance, reading and intermediate viewing distances.
Our most popular varifocal lenses are the new bespoke "freeform" lenses. Bespoke freeform lenses use the latest technology in varifocals to give the most comfortable and natural vision. The lenses are designed and manufactured individually for you, taking into account the shape of your chosen frame, the amount of the lens needed for different tasks and allowing the best possible vision across the lenses. Our most popular lenses are our Easy Adapt Extra Wide lenses which cost £320 per pair with anti-reflective coatings.
If you have a high prescription or want thinner lenses, consider high index lenses. 1.6 index lenses reduce the thickness and weight of lenses by around one third. A popular example are the Easy Adapt Extra Wide 1.6 lenses which cost £390 per pair with anti-reflective coatings. If you have a very high prescription, ultra thin lens options are available to reduce thickness and weight further.
Please contact us to discuss your options.
Anti-reflection coatings (MARs)
Most of our patients enjoy the benefits of multi anti-reflection coated lenses (MAR) which are available for a £35 supplement. MAR coatings reduce lens awareness by reducing glare. This is especially useful for night time driving and computer use. MAR coatings are also scratch resistant. They look great too, as they reduce surface reflections that other people see when looking at you in your glasses.

Everyone in my family come to Keyes Eyecare for our glasses, contact lenses and eye tests. Its a really personal thorough service. One member of staff helped me to find a solution to being able to see both distance and close. Another is very friendly. One other had me using contact lenses confidently. I recommend them to everyone!L Todd - NHS choices
